Mouille Point is rich in history and its story dates back to the 18th century. The governor at that time erected a breakwater (known as a mouille in French) as a result of the continuous shipwrecks that took place. The breakwater would then act as a protection for the incoming vessels. Its construction started in 1743 and was mostly built by slaves and convicts. The project was, however, abandoned due to the dangerous conditions of the sea and only 100m of the breakwater was completed. A few years later the French added a battery to the breakwater and it became known as Mouille Point Battery. The famous red and white lighthouse was built and today it is the oldest operational lighthouse in South Africa.
