The bustling town of Jeffreys Bay is bordered on both sides by nature reserves and rivers. The Kabeljous Estuary in the Kabeljous Nature Reserve is known as one of the best-preserved estuaries in the Eastern Cape, and every year the flamingos return to spend the summer here. For the nature lovers, there are wonderful hiking trails in Kabeljous Nature Reserve as well as in the Noorsekloof Nature Reserve.
Jeffreys Bay is the hub of the calamari industry of the Eastern Cape. Angling as well as deep sea fishing is extremely popular here, and fresh seafood can be enjoyed in abundance in many of the town's restaurants.
Jeffreys Bay is one of the five most famous surfing destinations in the world and hosts the annual World Surf League (WSL) surfing event at Super Tubes during July. Spectators and professional surfers from all over the world flock to this event.
The Jeffreys Bay Surf Break
An exceptionally long, fast, tubing right hand point break breaks along the west side of the bay. The break is regarded as one of the best right hand point breaks in the entire world, in both consistency and quality, in season. It has been divided up into several sections, including, from the top of the point, Kitchen Windows, Magna tubes, Boneyards, Supertubes, Impossibles, Tubes, the Point, and Albatross. "Supertubes", which itself breaks for about 300m or more, is regarded as the best part of the wave. On rare occasions (large wave sizes, wide-breaking waves, and even swells), Boneyards can link up all the way to the Point for a ride over one kilometre long. Optimal size is considered to be from about 4 to 10 feet (Hawaiian scale), or about 8 to 20 feet wave faces.
Jeffreys Bay Dolphin Beach is one of only six beaches in the Eastern Cape to have been awarded Blue Flag status ahead of the 2019/2020 summer season, confirming that J Bay is a destination of international standards. This prestigious award requires the beach adhering to strict standards and is examined on various criteria including safety standards, water quality standards, environmental education initiatives, providing environmental information to the public, the provision of services to bathers and general environmental management standards.
