Tips and Tricks for Backyard Makeover on a Budget

If you feel the time is right for a backyard makeover, the only thing you should watch out for is the budget.

Don’t be disheartened at the very beginning – you can make wonderful improvements in the backyard for little money, as discussed in the following points:

Add a path

If you want to tame your backyard a bit, then a meandering path will do just that without any need to use pavers.

Instead, try using 1-cm crushed rock that comes in many colours. Use stakes first to determine the shape, then wrap the bender board around the stakes.

Lay down the crushed rock (10-cm thick) and they flatten the surface using a plate compactor. If you don’t have a plate compactor, you can rent it from a home-supply centre.

Fit the landscape with the current style

Look at your home and your backyard as connected entities. In other words, your backyard will reflect the architecture of your house in some ways.

Pick up the cues of your house that will point you in the right direction.

After that, you are free to try out attractive landscaping ideas that will make you want to be outside. Let the focus of the garden be something that can also be connected to your home in some way.

Concrete patio

If you have a plain concrete patio, there are two inexpensive ways to improve its looks.

The first option is to lay slate tiles over it, using a thin-set mortar, which would create an elegant effect. Secondly, you could coat the surface with masonry stain in a colour you like, or even create a checkerboard pattern using two shades.

Lawn and mulch mix

It would be great if you can have both – a lovely lawn combined with mulch at the right places.

To have a healthy, decorative lawn, you can have a professional lawn mowing from time to time, and focus on the mulch on your own.

Just lay coloured mulch on all flowerbeds and exposed soil to give it a finished, clean look. As a bonus, mulch will block weeds and keep the necessary nutrients for the plants.

Build a pergola

A dream backyard should have a pergola. First, clear out one area on the deck or in the backyard where you will install the pergola. You can build it yourself, as there are many useful guides online about it.

And, in case you spend a lot of time outside, then add curtains, which will provide you with extra shade.

Mural on the fence

Okay, you could just repaint the fence but it’s far more unique to design a mural on it. It’s cheap and it’s incredibly lovely.

Just make sure you know which paint to use and the scale of the mural first. That way, you will know how to adequately prepare the fence.

Try xeriscape

By opting for xeriscape, you will also reduce water usage in the backyard and need minimum maintenance.

This is a simple landscaping idea consisting only of several plants and materials, and ideas are as big as your imagination.

Backyard cinema

Making a DIY screen is pretty cheap, while it’s pretty easy to add a projector, a few comfy pillows, blankets, and string lights for the ultimate movie night in the backyard under the stars.

All in all

As you can see, a backyard makeover can be as cheap as you want – but it doesn’t mean the change can’t be awesome.
