Staring at the walls of your own house and thinking how old they look?

If the lockdown has brought you into realizing how old your house looks, this article is for you.

You are not required to buy a new house, to feel new. You just have to make a few changes to your current house to make it feel new again. Since the lockdown has left so much free time at our disposal, spending some of it decorating and renovating your house, isn’t a bad idea.

Following are a few ideas that you could follow to make your old house look new:

1 – Sit and plan

You cannot just get started without a plan. Choose a fine day, when you are in the best of creative moods and decide what needs to be upgraded about your house.

You could also try to partner with a property management that will do the property maintenance for you. This way, you can decide together on what to change. If it’s the color of the walls, you would want to decide what changes you would want to make to the walls.

Make sure that all the rooms look like they belong to the same house. Mismatched rooms could be a problem aesthetically and will make your house look like a kindergarten (different rooms, different themes). Choose a design that you would want to implement throughout the house.

2 – Deep clean and declutter

Start with decluttering and start with a single room. Decide all the materials and items that aren’t required anymore in the house. It could be a broken lamp or a vase. Pile them up separately.

Once you have decluttered a room, you could jump into another, or you can give a deep cleaning to the room and then jump into another. Deep cleaning the house is necessary despite the regular cleaning. There are certain corners of the house that remain untouched for a long time. Deep cleaning allows you to clean them thoroughly.

3 – Colour white

Give your walls a good cleaning and color them white. You could think of it as “whitewashing“, but it adds a lot to your house. The white color will make your walls look like a clean canvas.

Start with one room, color all the walls white, and then jump to another room. Do not forget to paint the ceilings too. The white color will work to cover all imperfections in the wall and will make them seen less. You could use a regular paintbrush to do so if your walls do not have an even structure, or you could use paint rollers if they have an even surface.

Also, do not forget to apply at least two coats.

4 – Wallpaper

If your house also has wallpapers stuck to its walls, like most other old houses, you might want to get rid of those. Wallpaper makes your house look mundane and boring.

Hire a wallpaper remover from a hardware store and remove all the wallpaper off your walls. After painting the walls white, you could either coat them with another color or choose a more decent and yet modern wallpaper to cover them. Ditching the wallpaper would be a good choice since you could paint your walls with better colors.

A complete kitchen remodel could be a good option if you have some extra time and energy to spend.

5 – Paint the doors and cupboards

Since the walls have been painted white, you could choose to paint the doors and the cupboards in a different color that stands out and breaks the monotony.

You could paint them in some funky and bright colors or you could paint them in more subtle colors like grey, depending upon your personality. Do not forget to highlight the special features of your house that make it stand out from the rest. The cupboards and the doors should be painted in different colors.

You could also choose to change the curtains of your house and even change the position of the furniture.

Conclusion

Making your old house look brand new isn’t as much of a task as it seems.

Just start by making a plan for the entire house. Once you’re done with a plan, start cleaning and decluttering the house. Paint all the walls and the ceilings white and get rid of the wallpapers. Remodeling your kitchen could be a good option. Paint the doors, windows, and cupboards in a different color than the walls to break the monotony.
