There are many advantages to apartment living: it is usually quite secure, you have a good community system around you, and you have low maintenance costs.

It truly is one of the easier ways of living and getting your foot into the property market.

However, an apartment is not as spacious as a house or simplex or duplex might be, which means that you are restricted to what you can and cannot do.

Many people believe that one of those restrictions is gardening. Since there is no private lawn outside an apartment, many apartment dwellers don’t take up gardening.

Recently, however, people living in apartments have found ways to use even the smallest of spaces in order to grow plants, fruits, and vegetables.

They have proven that gardening doesn’t just have to be a dream that apartment dwellers have, but it can become a reality – and it is very easy to do!

No matter how big or small your space is, whether you have a balcony or not, you can start your own little apartment garden in your tower in the sky.

All it takes is a little knowledge and a green thumb, as pointed out below:

#1 – Select plants suited for smaller spaces

The worst thing that you can do when shopping for plants for your apartment is deciding on something that is going to take up a lot of room.

Things like corn and squash won’t work because they need lots of space and sunlight.

Remember, your space is limited.

Small citrus trees work well when planted in patio containers. Tomatoes and peppers are also easy to grow given that there is enough sunlight. Greens, microgreens, and carrots are great space savers, and herbs require little effort. You can leave them in your kitchen and use them whilst you are cooking.

#2 – Your garden plan should be creative

No apartment is alike which is why your garden plan should never be the same as anyone else’s.

You can definitely get creative with it! And that will be especially helpful if you have limited space.

Tiered shelving is a clever way to stack more potted plants in an area whilst old fashioned windows boxes are perfect for small carrots.

Don’t underestimate hanging baskets – they allow you to grow vertically all the way up to the ceiling.

The best place to find inspiration is at the local nursery. They might even be able to help you think of new ideas.

#3 – Try to plant companions together

Companion planting makes use of a technique where two plants that ‘go together’ are planted in the same container.

Tomato and basil, for example, are great combinations so it would be a good idea to plant them alongside each other. Heck, some people even say that the basil makes the tomatoes taste better.

Cilantro and peppers grow very well together and the cilantro actually prevents pests from eating the peppers. Other companions include leeks, lettuce, chives, and onions.

Companion planting is a great way to save space without giving up any of the plants that you enjoy.

#4 – Use super soil for superfoods

The best way to ensure that your plants grow is with fertile-rich, organic soil. This will ensure that your plants get enough nutrients to prosper.

If the root system has access to plant food, the produce will be abundant and beautiful. This is especially important if you have a container garden where the tight plant spacing and root systems need a little bit more TLC.

Replenish the soil with compost from your own apartment compost bin to ensure that there is enough nutrition throughout the entire season.
