Brak Furniture designs and makes fun, nostalgic pieces with a stamp of creative sophistication.
The word “brak” refers to a mongrel dog, and it is not by coincidence that owners Zoe Laband and Wolfgang Muller have so named their company. Founded in May 2011, Brak also restores and up cycles furniture. The name, epitomizes the ethos behind their brand; to be fun and playful. Zoe and Wolfgang, have no design background, if you can believe it.
“It started off as a fun thing to do to relax. We are both screenwriters and this was a way to get out from behind our desks, just another creative outlet. We’ve always up cycled furniture for our house, so when we got too many pieces, we decided to start selling them.”
Finding what big chains stores had to offer unappealing and not falling within the budget of boutique furniture stores, they decided to supply their own demands. The aesthetics of their creations are unique and distinctive.
Brak grew out of the desire to create “fun, individual and retro-inspired furniture. For young people, like ourselves, who want stylish and well made pieces. We really try to keep our pieces reasonably priced, so that people like ourselves can buy them”.
True creatives, Zoe still works full-time in the film industry and does Brak at night. Wolfgang has recently taken a break from screenwriting to concentrate mostly on Brak, while occasionally directing.
Zoe and Wolfgang plan to launch the company officially in a couple of months. “We are busy designing two new ranges, one is a little more high-end with more wood and lacquer finishes. Still lots of colour, but with a more expensive finish, and then more pieces in our current range”. They have a stand at Market on Main on Sundays if you’d like to see the furniture.
Each one of their pieces are made to order, so it can be created according to customer size and specifications and deliver nation wide.
