Instead of a vacation, why not choose a staycation? These are becoming huge trends all over the world. Many people are choosing to create the perfect holiday at home rather than spending money going somewhere else.

South Africa recently entered Level 4 lockdown for the second time in a year and unfortunately, it has been implemented during the winter holidays. Even though local travelling is still permitted, some travellers might not want to risk it during the pandemic.

There are many ways that you can create a relaxing holiday at home without breaking the bank or stepping foot outside your yard:

#1 – Spa-day at home

People often want to unwind after a long week at work but it is not always possible to visit a spa.

A great alternative is to create a spa at home in your bathroom.

You only have to make a few changes to turn the room into a sanctuary where you can forget all about your worries. Firstly you should ensure that there is no visible clutter on the counters.

Secondly, you can light up the candles that you usually only set out for decorative purposes. Get those essential oils going and soak up the aromas. Lastly, you should splurge on things like soft towels, new robes, and other amenities that will make you feel relaxed. Treat yourself!

#2 – Staycation in your living room

The best time to turn your living room into a staycation paradise is during the holidays. You can do anything in this room to make it feel more comfortable for you.

Rearrange the furniture in new ways you haven’t thought of before.

Update some of the pillows, throws, and décor in the room. You can even create a minibar in the corner of the room where you can make unlimited adult beverages. It’s always gin o’clock somewhere!

#3 – Staycation in your backyard

If you don’t want to spruce up the living room, you can tackle the backyard especially if it’s a beautiful day outside.

You don’t want to do too much work here because it is after all a staycation.

You can go shopping for a few plants to create a serene atmosphere. Fairy lights are always a good idea especially if you are planning on spending evenings outside. An absolute must is a backyard audio system for those lazy afternoons where you just want to relax to your favourite songs and feel the breeze flit across your face.

Add a good book and a hammock, and presto!

#4 – Dine out whilst dining in

It is very easy to bring the restaurant feeling into your home during your staycation. It works better when you have a dining room but if you have a table and chairs outside, it can work just as well.

Create a stunning centrepiece to set the mood. This can be flowers, plants, or other elements from your home.

Bring out the fine porcelain crockery you save for “special occasions”. This will transport you to a Michelin-star restaurant even if you are eating takeaways from down the road.

#5 – Hotel at home

At the end of your very long, relaxing day, you are probably going to be exhausted. Make your staycation even more exciting by turning your bedroom into a hotel suite.

Change your linen to the special bedding you have saved for guests. Clean, unused bedding will definitely create a tranquil feeling in your room.

What’s even better is if you spend the night in the guest room. It will feel as if you’re not even at home!

Don’t feel too sad that you can’t go on holiday. Bring the holiday home and relax to your heart’s content.
