Beacon Isle Beach, Plettenberg Bay

Located straight above the gorgeous Beacon Isle Beach in Plettenberg Bay, an exceptionally steep piece of land on the bluff had to be converted into a beach house. The challenge now was how to ‘live’ across such a vertically-driven program!

The rather extreme topography obstacles turned out to have quite the most amazing upside: once the design and construction challenges were overcome, the steepness of its location meant that this home was going to have unobstructed, panoramic views, which could easily extend beyond the 180-degree sight, ranging from Robberg Reserve in the south, all the way to the Keurbooms Lagoon in the north!

The trick was to get to balance the two!

The decision was made that the living area would have the widest of the vertical platforms. The kitchen, dining space, as well as entertainment areas, would all open up onto an expansive, partially-covered terrace.

A variety of so-called ‘zones’ was created, and would be occupied by pergolas, braai area, canopies level changes and swimming pool, depending on how the terrace was to be used: quiet lounging space during the week or entertainment paradise to be shared with friends and family on the weekends!

Besides having ‘grey’ elements, the property also features a number of ‘green components‘. Besides the upmarket systems integrated into this home, it boasts sustainable features such as a rainwater harvesting setup, and PV panels with batteries, to name but a few.

And yes, even though the contemporary style undoubtedly rules the architecture and interior detailing, it’s worth mentioning that a palette of timber, in combination with natural stone, decorate the house both inside and out. These materials were installed to weather into the greys and driftwood accents placed to put the house into its coastal setting.

Meanwhile downstairs, the ground floor hosts the garages, staff quarters, and the timber & stone-cladded entrance volume and staircase!
