Your bedroom is the serene oasis where you retire to after a day of long, hard work; a place where you can escape life and soak in the tranquility of your space.

This is what it should be, but for many, it is a place they avoid with clothes turning furniture in chairdrobes and boring furniture killing the peaceful vibe. If this is the case, then your bedroom should receive a lot more attention and even a renovation.

If you are on a tight budget, don’t worry – you arrived at the right spot!

These 5 tips will definitely help you along:

#1 – Time to repaint!

So easy and so simple.

This first thing that you do is your repaint your bedroom walls. There is nothing like a fresh coat of paint to brighten up any room!

Consider how certain colours make you feel: you might like greys and blues because it is peaceful, or you might like lilac or lavender because it adds colour to the room. You might love yellow and orange because it energizes the room, or dark red because it lends a romantic shade to the room.

Don’t forget about the moldings and the ceilings – these don’t have to stay white!

#2 – Why not consider DIY with furniture?

If you can’t afford a new bedroom set, go eco-friendly and buy used pieces. Thrift stores are wonderful places to buy second-hand furniture.

Don’t worry about the colour they are painted or stained – you can always strip it and add your touch to it. Knobs and drawer handles can also easily be replaced with vintage pieces and these are always available at a flea market for next-to-nothing.

Your own personal touch will make these pieces far more interesting so don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty.

#3 – Try finding some great art!

It doesn’t have to be the Mona Lisa or a Dali original, but great art is a good way to liven things up in the bedroom.

You can hit flea markets or vintage online stores in order to find great art that other people want to throw out. You can even try your own hand at DIY art that you can hang up.

Consider visiting art schools. A lot of the students have exhibitions and the art is cheaper than established artists and sometimes just as great.

You can also buy a blank canvas and simply write your favorite quotes on it.

#4 – Ever thought of redoing your headboard?

The headboard is most often the main thing that is overlooked in a bedroom and it can make all the difference.

You can easily transform your headboard by using things around the house and not spending a lot of money at all.

If you have an old door lying around you can chop off the ends, sand it down, restain or repaint it and voila – you have a brand new headboard if you lay it on its side.

If you don’t want to go through so much trouble, you can simply cover your current headboard with the material of your choice.

Some people even use mirrors as headboards. The choice is entirely up to you!

#5 – Go get creative with accessories!

You don’t have to buy the vase that everyone has; rather get creative and do your own unique thing.

You can use a vintage coffee can to hold fresh flowers, for instance, or you can use a ceramic pot to hold your jewelry.

That ugly lamp you have hiding in your closet? Break it out and throw a beautiful scarf over it.

No one will even know what the lampshade looks like and you will have a super trendy light in your bedroom!
