Ah, yes, (spring) cleaning: a chore we love to hate.

It doesn’t matter how loud you play your music, how wide you throw those windows open, or how hard you try to get your family to help you, cleaning still remains a tedious job.

Many people start cleaning their homes but as soon as they are done they find that it is not really as clean as they thought it would be – and this after all the back-breaking cleaning that they have been doing!

The truth is, you might have been cleaning the wrong way your entire life. Here are a few things you should not be doing when cleaning your home:

#1 – Dry mopping

Are you even allowed to call it mopping if the mop isn’t wet?

You might think that it is the best way to get all the loose crumbs and dirt off the floor before you mop it, but you are just creating more work for yourself.

A better idea would be to bring out the big boy: your vacuum cleaner. It removes twice as much debris and this is ultimately what you want to achieve.

If you wet the mop and start mopping the floor, any loose debris could stick and you will have a hard time getting rid of it.

#2 – Not cleaning the vacuum cleaner

If you decide to use the vacuum cleaner, you need to make sure that you have emptied it from the last time you used it.

If the bag is more than half full, you need to get rid of the old dirt and dust trapped in there. When a vacuum becomes too full, it doesn’t clean as efficiently as you want it to.

This means that you might have to go over an area twice to ensure that it is clean. Sounds a lot like extra work, doesn’t it?

#3 – Ignoring instructions

We know that it is fun to live on the wild side of life and to go rogue but when you are cleaning your house, it is better to adhere to the instructions that you are given.

If your lemon floor cleaner says that you only need one tablespoon per liter, follow the instruction.

A lot of people think that more is better, but sometimes the back of the bottle might actually be right.

Ingredients are made to work a certain way which is why you should read the instructions carefully and not simply skim over it.

#4 – Using paper towels

When something is dirty, our first instinct is to use a paper towel to clean it. If we don’t have paper towels handy, we grab the nearest rag. This is not always the best way to approach cleaning the house.

Microfiber cloths are a far better solution to cleaning because they remove even the tiniest specs of dirt and dust. They come in all shapes and sizes, even gloves!

Using microfiber cloths often eliminates the need for chemicals (except if you have heavy-duty stains) because it catches the dirt and dust inside the microfibers.

#5 – Not wiping down your lightbulbs

Lightbulbs can become very dirty very quickly. Not only do they start looking unappealing but they emit less light than clean lightbulbs.

You might be switching on every light in the house to create a cheery atmosphere when one clean lightbulb can brighten up the whole place.

Before you start cleaning, make sure that the lights are all switched off and use a dry microfiber cloth to clean the bulbs. You are going to save so much time leaving all of those other lights switched off – and let’s not even get started on how much you’ll save on your electricity bill!

Cleaning might not be a science but if you treat it like one, it will go faster and it will be more efficient.
