Umhlanga Rocks was initially home to the San-gatherers. Soon after the Nguni-occupation, the British colonized the area and it became part of the larger estate belonging to Sir Marshall Campbell, a sugar entrepreneur. In 1860 Indian indentured labourers were brought in to work on Campbell’s sugar estates, bringing their colourful culture with them. Today this area is a cultural hotpot and boasts a diverse set of people working and living together.
