Umhlanga Rocks was initially home to the San-gatherers. In the 1800s the area south of the Tugela River (including Umhlanga) was occupied by Nguni-speaking people who later unified under King Shaka and came to stand as the Zulu nation. Soon after the Nguni-occupation, the British colonized the area and it became part of the larger estate belonging to Sir Marshall Campbell, a sugar entrepreneur. In 1860 Indian indentured labourers were brought in to work on Campbell’s sugar estates, bringing their colourful culture with them. Today this area is a cultural hotpot and boasts a diverse set of people working and living together.

Umhlanga has grown from Campbell’s acquisition of it and is now a business and shopping hub that people from all over Durban often frequent. One of the biggest shopping centres in the country, Gateway, sits proudly just outside Umhlanga and offers a wide range of boutique and retail stores, restaurants, and fun activities for the whole family. If it is something more outdoorsy that you are looking for, the Umhlanga promenade stretches from Durban View Park to Breakers, providing the perfect opportunity for sight-seeing and a relaxing walk.
