#1 – Use the wall space to plant a vertical garden
When we think of gardens we think of them as in the ground and in rows. But if space is tight, then this might not be an option.
However, you can still enjoy a garden by utilizing the wall space around you: you can grow vines like peas, cucumbers and pole beans on any type of support system.
These vines climb towards the sun, so you can easily buy containers for their roots and watch them grow.
Watermelons and pumpkins consist out of trailing vines which can also work on a patio garden, but for this, you’ll need extra support.
#2 – Decorate using wall fountains
Everyone loves the serene sound of a water fountain, which is why it should have a spot in your patio garden.
Wall water fountains add charm and character to any outdoor living space. Except for the fact that it is visually appealing, wall water fountains can also drown out noise from the roads.
Depending on the type of fountain, the sounds can range from a babbling brook to a cascading waterfall.
And if you add a few flowers next to it, then you can easily turn it into a Parisian garden. It can also be used indoors where it can work as natural air humidifiers.
#3 – Pay attention to the amount of light shining on the balcony
Before you buy any seeds, do your homework:
What is the sunlight like on the balcony? How much sunlight do you get and where?
Strawberries, lavender, and oregano all need copious amounts of sunlight, whereas ferns, lilies, and English ivy thrive in the shade.
Once you have figured out what your sunlight situation is, you will be able to buy plants that fit those requirements.
Try and buy plants that require the same amount of water, so that you stick to one water schedule.
#4 – Avoid potting soil
Patio gardens require their plants to be planted in pots or containers.
Containers plants grow best when they are in an environment where there is a lot of drainage. Potting soil is too compact so you will have to look for a soil-less potting mix. Popular blends include perlite, peak and pine bark.
Even though these mediums do not provide nutrients to the plants, they don’t dry out very quickly. They also resist compacting which means that the plant’s roots will be able to absorb water and take in moisture from the surroundings.
#5 – Fake flowers need love too
It is true that many of us don’t have the time or patience to grow a garden, which is why we settle for fake flowers.
Even though they are fake, they can lend a loving touch to any room in the house including your patio garden. You can stop by your local craft store and pick up a few pre-made floral arrangements.
No one will suspect anything and you won’t have to deal with pesky bees or other insects.
It is undoubtedly the best way to go if you lack green thumbs!
