Home burglaries are a common occurrence. As locks are easy to pick and everyone can learn it, you need some other strategies, tactics and security systems to protect your home from being robbed.

Burglars usually pick houses that are easy to rob, meaning houses with flimsy front doors, with unlocked garage doors or unsecured windows.

If you make it difficult for them to try and enter your home, they are likely to give up. If you want to secure your home, read on to learn about some simple ways to make your home a safer place:

1 – Lock your doors and windows

When talking about some inexpensive ways to burglar-proof your home, locking your doors and windows is number one.

As statistics show, burglars go for easy targets such as unlocked doors and windows. In that way, they can easily enter your home without any effort and without being noticed.

Research reports that a vast number of burglaries happen during the daytime, from 10 am to 3 pm when people are usually at work.

And the most common entryways are through the front door or first-floor window.

So, the first thing you should do is lock all your doors and windows, even when you’re at home. You can also find some special locking systems on the market for an even higher security level.

2 – Secure your patio and garage doors

Patio doors are easy to pick and that’s why they’re usually the burglars’ target.

When people wanted to secure their patio doors in the past, they used to put a stick in the door track. But this option is inconvenient as you have to remove the stick whenever you want to use your patio door.

Luckily for us, there are some new options available. Many companies offer foot locks for patio doors. This system fastens along the bottom of the door and has a bolt that fits into a grommet to hold the door secure. There are also some locks that are attached to the top of the door. Both of these locks are easy to install and don’t take more than 10 minutes from start-to-finish installation.

Another weak point of our house is usually the garage door. Garage doors are usually made of some wooden panels that are easy/easier to kick in. Adding a deadbolt won’t help in this case. Instead, you can try barring the door from inside.

3 – Update your locks

You should check your locks from time to time.

Check for any damages, easy-to-pick locks, jimmy and bump open locks and think about whether there are some extra keys of your home floating around.

If you have a ‘yes’ answer to any of the questions, then it’s definitely time for you to change your locks for more tampered-proof ones. You can easily find a 24-hour locksmith who will do a professional job for you.

4 – Store your valuables in a safe

It’s never a good idea to leave your valuables in plain sight. We have different kinds of safe for this reason.

However, a safe with valuables should also be secured. You never leave a safe in plain sight and unsecured, so that a burglar can easily see it and walk out the door with it.

No. First, you should find a hiding place for your safe. And second, you should bolt it into the floor.

Bottom line: make it as difficult as you can for thieves to find it, unlock it and just take it away.

5 – Install an alarm system

Depending on your budget, there are many alarm systems available.

There are some simple and inexpensive alarms for your doors and windows, which when triggered activate a shrieking sound.

There are also some more expensive options, which include home surveillance cameras and more complex alarm systems that alert you and the local security company for any unusual presence.

6 – Protect your mail

Mail theft is a huge problem these days and we often overlook our mailbox security and don’t think about protecting it.

However, it can be very dangerous if thieves steal your correspondence, bank statements, and personal information and they can use the information to steal your identity, which can create a series of serious problems for you.

As most of the mailboxes are low-tech, they are an easy target for thieves. But fortunately, there’s a way to protect your mail. You can install a security mailbox, which looks, operates and is installed as a traditional model. The difference is that it is usually made of heavy-duty steel and it requires a key to unlock it.

Conclusion

People usually don’t think about all these things concerning the security of their homes unless they’ve already been robbed.

All-in-all, you should always be careful and mindful about the security and privacy of your home in order to avoid any negative and unnecessary burgling experience.

You never know what a criminal mind can come up with.
