5 COVID-19 Christmas Tree Ornaments to Top Off 2020

Christmas is around the corner but all over the world, people are celebrating it differently.

With COVID-19, many families are going to be apart for the festive season and will have to resort to Zoom-dinners and virtual celebrations.

Luckily, nothing is stopping anyone from decorating their Christmas trees!

So why not embrace this new normal we have been living in for the past few months and zhoosh your tree up with a few coronavirus-inspired ornaments? They are cheap and, of course, very easy to get hold of!

1 – Santa Claus is coming…with a mask!

The 25th of December signals the arrival of everyone’s favourite bearded man in the red suit. We are talking about Santa Claus, of course!

Just like everyone else, Santa and his band of merry elves will have to do the responsible thing and put a mask over their faces.

You can do the same at home by buying a Santa mask or ornament, or simply decorating one you currently have with a blue face mask.

It looks festive, it sends a message, and it is a place to hang your mask for those (many!) days where you forget to take one with you.

2 – Jingle rolls, jingle rolls

And by rolls, we are talking about toilet paper.

Remember – it wasn’t too long ago that we contemplated using it as a currency!

Before the lockdown started, toilet paper was the first thing to fly off the shelves as many people started hoarding it. Maybe you are one of those people, too, and now you have a storage unit stuffed with toilet paper!

Do not let it be boring; bring the celebration to every room in the house and put something festive on the many rolls you might have lying around. Put a simple silver ribbon around it or reuse the cardboard rolls as Christmas ornaments.

3 – Rudolph, the red-nosed first responder

Everyone can agree that the real heroes of this tumultuous time are the first responders that have been battling the virus on the frontlines. Nurses, doctors, and other medical staff have risked their lives to ensure that patients get the best care possible.

You can create your own first responder ornament for the tree by building a figurine with Lego blocks or finding an online store that will personalise one for you.

This is a great way to honour a first responder in your family and it makes a great stocking filler on Christmas Day.

4 – Deck the halls with sanitiser, fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

One thing’s for sure: sanitiser is something that will never be taken for granted again.

We have to sanitise our hands in every store we enter, every event we attend, and when we get back home again. It is the perfect ornament for your tree and it is very easy to personalize with custom-designed labels.

Buy a pocket-sized bottle and add a sparkly ribbon, and – voila! A true COVID-19 ornament. Again, this can be given as a stocking filler or you can make a fancy display out of it for guests to take home on Christmas Day after the festivities.

5 – All I want for Christmas is Zoom

We have practically been living on Zoom and other video-calling platforms and it would be a crime not to pay our respects to it at the end of the year.

Zoom ornaments are already quite popular in the USA, so there’s no reason why South Africa should be running behind.

After all, you can easily make your own by using normal clay. This will be a fun activity for the kids to get involved in. You can create tiny versions of your laptops and add the people you would like to spend Christmas with your clay Zoom-model.

Even though this year has been a tough one, we need some laughter at the end of it all. Do not be scared to make this holiday season the silliest one yet.
