  • 5 - Adapt your home to your current needs

You have finally settled into your new house. The moving boxes are all unpacked, you have hung all the art that you have accumulated over the years, and you even had your first cup of coffee whilst admiring your brand-new place.

But still, something is missing. The house has all your stuff in but it does not feel like it is yours.

Maybe it is just because you have not made any new memories in it yet but there could be a few things amiss.

Here are five ways to transform your house into a home:

1 – Focus on the flooring

It might seem like a weird starting point but floors bring all the elements of a house together.

You spend a lot of time on the floor, especially if you have children, so it needs to be one of the focus points for the house to feel like a home.

If you have empty floors without rugs or carpets, it might feel emptier than it is. Textiles lend a softness to a room that makes all the difference. Find a rug that you can throw down to make the place seem a bit more like your own

2 – Intimate light fixtures

Just like flooring, lights can change the atmosphere of a room. Old light fixtures might be outdated, so it is the perfect excuse to make your mark and install new ones.

Add a personal touch by installing an old family chandelier or a lamp that has been in your family home for years. Homes often have only one overhead light and this is understandable due to budget constraints.

If possible, however, play around with different types of light in one room until you have a cosy effect.

3 – Displays memories and photos on empty wall space

Framed photos are the best way to make the house feel like your own. Add a few of your favourites to the walls in your house or create a focus wall with as many photos as possible.

The artwork is also a meaningful element especially when you have heirlooms that have been passed down from generation to generation. If you do not have any artwork, you can hang your children’s artwork or create a brand-new one from scratch.

These pieces add a uniqueness to your home that will make you feel like less of a stranger in your place.

4 – Create an open feel

This is easier to do if you have an open floor plan house, but it can be easily accomplished if you don’t!

Modern homes combine the different functions of rooms into one big room to create a familial atmosphere in the home.

What is better than cooking in the kitchen whilst your children are talking to you in the living room? An open floor plan can create a close-knit feeling between family members who do not have a lot of time in the day to spend together and you can keep an eye on small children playing whilst you are working.

5 – Adapt your home to your current needs

Moving into a new house means that you are taking over a previous person’s living conditions. This might not meet your own and this is why it could feel that the house is not yet yours.

Don’t be scared to break the rules. You don’t have to keep the bedroom a bedroom – turn it into a home office. It is important to adapt the house to your current needs and it might not happen immediately. Give yourself time to grow into the house and don’t rush things.
